I have on good authority that there isn’t such a thing at my University, however this weekend I had the pleasure of being invited to one of those office christmas parties, as a plus one.
First of all, let me tell you something: I don’t think it is necessarily weird that one works at a company where almost everyone is in their 50s, but it gets really awkward really fast when you have to attend a party with them. A party where there is alcohol. Lots of it.
Most probably, you will end up sitting at a table with the person who invited you (duh), their two friends who are also younger (and their plus ones, if they bring any, who look as lost as you), two random older couples who for some reason are super touchy touchy (already), and someone who got drunk during the cocktail that preceded dinner (smart one). At this point, you’re thinking: fuuuuuun, right?
Well, it gets a lot funnier when the waiters are instructed to refill the wine glasses everytime they’re half empty. It gets ridiculously funny when you’re served a main dish that consists of tasteless gourmet food that looks like this. It gets hilarious when there is a surprise dance class in the middle of the whole thing and they ‘teach’ people the macarena. It gets bizarre as f*ck when the DJ tries to bring the house down with this song, but instead all he does is inspire the older couples to start making out (hard) on the dancefloor.
Finally, the bar opens and you can order yourself a proper drink (or four) and start coping with all the crazy shit that’s going on. By coping, I mean, say the hell with it!, and just join everyone who’s making a (total) fool of themselves. After all, you’re the plus one, you don’t even work with them nor have to look them in the eye on Monday. Maybe next year.
